Charles Howard

Coach Howard began his coaching career at North Carolina A&T as a graduate assistant in 1989-90. He served in that capacity two years before becoming a full-time assistant coach in 1992.  He returned to his high school alma mater (Fike) as an assistant coach for one season in 1990-91 Howard was a college assistant coach at the following schools: University of Maryland Eastern Shore in 1999, Savannah State University in 2001, and Barton College in 1998 and 2008-2013. Coach Howard was also a head high school coach for 10 seasons at Southwest Edgecombe High School in Pinetops, N.C. from 1993-1997 and Beddingfield High School in Wilson from 2002-2008. He led Beddingfield to the North Carolina State play-offs four out of the six seasons during his tenure as head coach.

Coach Howard was greatly influenced by some of the best minds in the game of basketball.  Coach Don Corbett, who was a winner of seven consecutive MEAC Tournament Championships earning an automatic NCAA bid from 1981-1988; the late legendary Coach Harvey Reid Jr., formerly the winning-est coach in North Carolina High School Boys Basketball history, along with seven state championship titles to his credit; and Coach Ron Lievence 2007 Division II National Championship coach at Barton College and the winner of  six Conference Carolina regular-season crowns, four league tournament titles and seven NCAA Tournament appearances.

Coach Howard has been mentoring and tutoring coaches on the collegiate and high school level for the last 20 years in several capacities, such as how to become a head coach, how to be a great assistant coach, game strategies, developing team chemistry, developing positive relationships with players and other areas. Coach Howard has a passion for helping others be successful in their journey in life, especially those who are in the coaching profession and looking to get into the profession.  He also does skill development with players to improve their skills and abilities.

Coach Howard is a Wilson, NC native where he starred as a player at Fike High School. He was the leading scorer and rebounder on the 1984 State championship team as a junior. Howard earned All-State, All-East, Conference Player of the Year, Area Player of the Year, Team MVP and was selected to play in the North Carolina East/West All-Star game as a senior. Howard played collegiate at North Carolina A&T University. He was a member of two championship teams in 1987 and 1988. The 1988 team was undefeated and set a school and conference record of 14-0 and an overall record of 24-3, losing to national powers Georgia Tech and Syracuse. Howard earned Freshman Player of the Year honors in his first year and the Six-Man Award as a sophomore. His career was cut short by a serious knee injury as a junior.

​Howard graduated from North Carolina A&T in 1989 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration Management and earned a second Bachelor of Science in Business Education in 1991.

Coach Howard is currently a Skills Development Coach at the reputable Willie Diggs Basketball Academy in Northern Virginia (Sterling). Howard has been in that capacity for five years working with college, high school and youth in developing advanced skills.
